Not uncommon: It is not uncommon for a woman to have periods less frequently than once a month. Things that can cause a woman to have periods less frequently include: being overweight or obese, being very thin, excessive physical activity, and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). There are medical ways to help regulate periods but treatment is not necessary unless a woman is having trouble getting pregnant.
