Hormonal imbalance: Menstrual irregularities are not uncommon and anovulatory cycle is a common cause. If you miss more than two periods it would be time to see your doctor. If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time. You may consider implanted contraceptive or an IUD. Hyperplasia?: You could have uterine hyperplasia, when the uterine lining is extra thick & sheds more irregularly, from hormone changes or possibly other causes. If this has indeed been present for a year & you have not seen a Dr yet I would recommend that. You need a thorough exam & possibly an ultrasound or other tests . If they are normal your Dr can prescribe meds to help periods be more regular
