i get sharp pain in my achilles tendon during exercise - this has happened for years depite long periods of rest. it doesn't hurt when i walk. torn?

See orthopedic MD: I would recommend that you consult with an Orthopedic surgeon for this ongoing problem. It is possible that you injured it in the past and are dealing with an ongoing chronic tendinitis. Try stretching your calf muscles prior and after exercising, may help. Most of all, see Orthopedic surgeon for consultation and see if they can offer definitive treatment after thorough evaluation
