Only if new exposure: This depends on the time since the last possible exposure to HIV. The statement reminds your doctor that if you have been exposed recently, another test may be necessary. Depending on the exact test that was done, it takes 4 to 8 weeks for antibody tests to turn positive, rarely up to 3 months for some, especially the oral fluids test or older (first or second generation) tests.
