I have an achey, dull pain in the upper left area of my back and the side of my ribs. could it be from coughing too much since i have a cold?

Yes: You may have strained the muscles in between your ribs from coughing repeatedly. If the pain persists you may want to see your pcp. Sometimes this pain may be from the pleura (the lining around your lungs) as well.
