I have bad sprained ankle and osteochondral defect in same ankle. could this cause the leg to get swollen (from below the knee down to the ankle)?

I would be concerned: For a clot in the leg and I don't think your symptom is consistent with your injury and advise you to have it checked out ASAP, always better safe then sorry.
