Needle biopsy: Hi. I only would recommend surgery if it's thyroid cancer. Is your thyroid function normal? If so, I recommend fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) for cytology and, if available, gene testing. If it's benign, you can just follow it and avoid surgery. If you've decided you want surgery regardless of whether it's cancer, you can skip the FNAB. I usually only recommend surgery for cancer, however.

Nodules: Multiple nodules of the thyroid is almost always a benign entity, but a thyroidologist or endocrinologist is best qualified to evaluate and advise you as well as check you periodically. He/she will refer you to a skilled thyroid surgeon only if felt advisabley
