Fairly normal: Spotting is relatively common in the first trimester, especially if sexually active. In my patients I usually offer to do a progesterone level at this point if they have spotting as low progesterone can increase miscarriage risk and I will supplement with prometrium (micronized progesterone). No need to go to ER for this though.

Could be: Yes, this could be completely normal during pregnancy. If you get more severe bleeding or cramping see your Dr. but this sounds quite normal. Congratulations!

Not normal: Spotting in early pregnancy is somewhat worrisome. It can be bleeding that occurs as the placenta gets larger and burrows into the blood vessels of the uterus. Pregnancies with this type of bleeding usually go on to be normal. It can also be an early sign of a miscarriage. Its a good idea to see your doctor for this type of bleeding. Best wishes!
