My 8yr/old is going to have 1000mg of solumedrol (methylprednisolone) infusion for a jra flare. what can you tell me about this medicine and the dossage? is this high?

See details: This is a difficult question to answer without knowing the specific components of the flare. For instance, heart involvement requires a different approach than just a skin rash and aching. That said, 1000 mg of Solumedrol (methylprednisolone) is a high dose for an 8 year old. I therefore assume the flare is severe enough to warrant that high a dose. You need to discuss the rationale for this therapy with her doctors.

Yes but safe: JRA/JIA flares of arthritis can be quite severe, particularly at the time of diagnosis when the child has had no significant treatment yet. Most of the medications for JRA/JIA take at least several weeks to begin working, so if the child cannot walk or has many severely swollen joints that are painful and prevent normal activities, then a large IV dose of steroids (Solumedrol) is warranted and safe
