Why is the appendix the most worthless organ in the body?

Well, there is a theory that the appendix used to be used for digesting tough herbivorous food such as bark of a tree when our ancestors were mostly herbivores. This idea comes from looking at animals that are herbivores and they have large appendixes to help with digesting tough food.
