Discuss with your MD: External radiation and radioiodine therapy for thyroid cancer are relatively safe but they have different possible side effects. Radiation therapy may affect nearby structures like nerves affecting vocal cords causing hoarseness. The effects of radioiodine therapy may be: neck tenderness and swellin, nausea and vomiting, swelling and tenderness of the salivary glands, dry mouth and taste changes.
