Lead and Health: Lead is considered a heavy metal. Although there is not a normal limit it requires treatment when it is above established levels. Lead causes toxic effects due to interacting with proteins and interfering with the function of enzymes. It has many detrimental affects but young child can be adversely affected due to growing and developing tissues. Screening is the method for those at risk.
