A member asked:

Would pain caused by a cavity come from the tooth or the jaw?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Tooth initially: A cavity can cause tooth pain from thermal sensitivity to pain with sweets. As the caries progresses the tooth can ache, intermittently to constant dull ache. As the nerve is damaged the jaw can begin to hurt, mild to severe. Sometimes difficult to determine source, referred other teeth or parts of jaw.
