Treatable, not cured: Genital herpes is caused by various strains of herpes virus which are sexually transmitted. Once in the skin, it cannot be cured, and tends to cause intermittent outbreaks of rash/symptoms. Outbreaks can be shortened/less severe with oral or topical antiviral agents, such as Zovirax. Once daily oral agents can be used long term to prevent or diminish episodes. Safe sex to avoid transmission.
