Depends: What do you mean by improperly formed? Spherocytosis is due to defect ina membrane protein. Hemoglobinopathies can also result in abnormal shapes. Angiopathic anemia is another cause. Iron, folate and B12 deficiencies could also result in abnormal size and shape.
