Macrocytosis: Large red cells, measured by the MCV or mean corpuscular volume, are most commonly caused by drinking alcohol, an underactive thyroid, certain medications, viyamin B12 orfolate deficiency, an excess of new red blood cells (reticulocytosis), or bone marrow disorders such as myelodysplastic syndrome. A hematologist can make the diagnosis easily but may need to perform a bone marrow biopsy.
