Requires both muscle: to work harder to drive blood forward & ↑es valve leaflet loads to block reverse blood flow. Heart muscle requires more blood flow for more work (more susceptible to damage of artery Ds), muscle gets thicker/stronger but also stiffer (no longer allows blood return from veins at low pressure) over time. Both lead to ↑ed heart attack rates, enlargement, congestive failure, atrial fibrillation, etc.
