A member asked:

Largest dose of ibuprofen one can take for severe swelling on elbow from a bad fall with large angry spreading bruise? 600 or 800mg?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Ibuprofen: Generally speaking 800mg of ibuprofen is a maximal single dose which can be taken up to three times in a day. However use caution given the spreading bruise which suggests bleeding, as ibuprofen and other NSAIDS can lead to easy bleeding and perhaps worsen the situation. Tylenol (acetaminophen) may be a safer alternative for pain relief. Concern for fracture or more serious injury may warrant an x-ray.
