The IUD: The Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD is a progestin only contraceptive method.Progesterone opposes the estrogenic stimulus to the uterine lining to grow and instead signals it to mature. For this reason there is a markedly thinner lining that gets thinner over time (+a decreased risk of uterine cancer). That is the reason that you just have the dark spotting. Progestins also provide contraception. Estrogen is added for cycle control.
