Abscess: Swelling of his legs is probably due to his kidney problems, abscesses are signs of an infection, he should see his doctor for further evaluation.

Circulation Issue: Sounds like the kidney and leg issues may be different from each other. Definitely see a primary care physician asap. Discharging abscesses are nothing to play with, they are signs of infection and need to be treated sooner, not later. The swelling legs may be cardiac in nature, or vascular. Start his care today, see a pcp, then follow advice for referrals, if needed. May need diuretic too.
