Common reasons: Redness is from inflammation. Common reasons for inflamed lid skin in the elderly include blepharitis (a noncontagious allergy-like reaction), dry eye, and ectropion. Ectropion happens when the eyelid skin gets too loose and starts to sag away from the eyeball, leaving dried out areas of lid and eyeball in the process. Have her see an eye md (ophthalmologist) to find out best treatments.

Many reasons: As we get older many factors can cause the eye lid and/or eye to become more read. Often long term sun exposure can cause ocular rosacea (can happen in any race of people) to be more pronounced; meibomian glands can get clogged causing the lid margin to look red; this can also lead to dry eyes (also worsens with hormonal changes as we get older), which can also cause eye redness.
