What is the cause of morning hiccups?

Hiccoughs: These usually occur due to some irritation or spasm of the diaphragm. If you have a diaphragmatic hernia this may be the cause, or if you have gastroparesis and are not clearing your stomach contents during sleep this may be responsible. Without seeing you and obtaining a full history and exam, however, would only be guessing. If it disturbs you, see a doctor.
