Viral: If your child is fully vaccinated and does not have any underlying conditions, it is probably viral, with no need for antibiotics. If he has persistent fever or chest pain he needs an exam. Otherwise, fluids, prop him up to sleep, and some Benadryl (diphenhydramine) before bedtime to help him sleep through the night without coughing.
