Phlebitis: An inflamed vein is another name for superficial phlebitis. This can occur for many reasons but is commonly due to IV insertions, medications and even sclerotherapy. The vein becomes tender and hard. Initial treatment is with warm compresses, and anti-inflammlatories. If this doesn't resolve it, then evacuation or even local excision of the vein can be done but usually at a later time.
