What might it mean if you have small bumps starting behind your ears and spreading down your neck and under your jaw?

Need to see it: This is a pretty vague description. Are these bumps on the skin or under the skin? What do they look like? Are they painful? Skin stuff generally needs to be seen to tell what it is.
