Controversial: Don't believe the movies about 'truth serum'. Amytal interviews are helpful with people who are simply too anxious to openly speak of conflictual issues. I've seen plenty of folks both lie and still avoid issues. The power of suggestion can lead to 'abreaction', which can make amytal interviews useful. Just be careful about what you expect. Proper medical precautions are essential too.

Awake but drowsy: Amytal is a barbiturate given gradually by vein. Depending on dose, it induces drowsiness and sleep. For an interview using it, the patient is drowsy but awake -- the so-called "twilight state" in which relaxation allows conversation about important areas. The process has been used since the 1940's, but memories retrieved contain a mix of fact and fantasy -- must be externally verified.
