You're not alone: This is a pretty common story in my experience. Certain personality disorders with narcissistic, antisocial or borderline traits are characterized by selective behaviors. Google those three terms and see if one fits your dad.

Polarized: So, so sadly we often treat those we love the most poorly. You have probably heard the term "familiarity breeds contempt". People may no longer care what kind of "impression" they make on their family, while the judgement of others (even strangers) remains important to them. We all have many sides / facets to our personalities. It is best when they blend & are not polarized. See below :.
