Phlegm color?: Phlegm can be due to allergens, viruses, irritation from smoke. Chest pt (someone pounds on your back gently to not hurt you but repeatedly& firmly) can help break up the remaining mucus in addition to the mist of a hot shower, humidifier, & guaifenesin. Strengthen your immune system with vitamin d from natural sunlight (in southern states in the winter with sunblock as needed) or pills.

Excess phlegm: Depends on the cause. Excess phlegm can be caused many things, such as upper & lower airway infection, allergies, post-nasal drip, exposure to irritants, etc. Knowing if associated with a cough would help be helpful. Trial of over-the-counter anti-histamines may help. Certain patients improve after being treated with antacids (ler) depending on the cause. Even some food allergies can cause it.

Depends on cause: There are many causes of phlegm, some acute and some chronic. You need to have a diagnosis made first and then treat the cause.

Interesting?: Phlegm or mucous is a natural process of mucous production. If there are irritants or infections, more phlegm may be produced. Clearing this is usually by coughing or blowing. With a baby, excess mucous usually can only be coughed up by the babe. Otherwise you can use a suction bulb to help remove from the nose and back of the mouth. Usually nature will take the proper course & you do nothing.

Gargling and bland d: The most imp step is to find the target organ producing excess mucus, and options are nose, sinuses, lung and stomach. The expertise of an allergist/ immunologist will help define the organ involvement and pathological process involved.. Generally speaking the most common causes are chronic sinus disease, chronic bronchitis, gerd and perennial allergic rhinitis.Treatment is accordingly given. Avoi.
