High antibodies: If thyroid antibodies are even mildly elevated, then it is due to inflammation or hashimoto's thyroiditis. The thyroid hormones may be in normal range.

The TSH/ the thyroid: Hormone we check for thyroid function reflects the activity of the thyroid gland and not the thyroid condition. Usual normal TSH range : .5- 4.5/5. With hashimoto's, the function or activity could be low, normal or high. Paradoxically , a low or underactive thyroid would have a high or above normal TSH &vice-versa.On another mattergrave' disease is another condition which has overactive function.

TSH vs. antibodies: Although i don't know why someone would have checked for thyroid antibodies, if they were high, that is why your doctor says you have hashimotos. However, even if the antibodies are there, if your TSH is normal, that means your thyroid is still working fine. No meds are necessary. It does not cause symptoms. Your TSH does need to be checked periodically because you could develop thyroid dysfunction.
