Similar pain : It is not so much the pain that differentiates the two as other symptoms such as nature of the stools with bloody bowel movements and possible involvement of the anus and rectum. Both may have cramping pain associated with diarrhea. Both may irritate the intestines whereas irritable bowel tends to be associated with the small intestines, ibd may effect the small and/or large bowel.

Very similar pain: The pain characteristics of both ibs and ibd can be very similar. In fact, even the bowel movement abnormalities can be the same especially when the ibd is very mild. It would be best to have your doctor look you over and see if some tests should be done to better differentiate between the two.
