A member asked:

I have slightly elevated platelets. i read 35pc of people with elevated platelets also have cancer. is this true? should i be concerned?

Not necessarily: The most common reason for elevated platelets is probably iron deficiency. There are many other causes. Platelets go up with inflammatory reactions such as with rheumatoid arthritis, as well as with some cancers. Some unusual blood conditions (myeloproliferative neoplasias) cause elevated platelets, and rarely they can be elevated with some leukemias. Work with you doctor to find out why.

High platelets: That is not true. You will need proper workup to find out the cause of thrombosytosis. Causes are either primary or secondary (also known as reactive). Iron deficiency is a common cause and jak-2 mutation driven condition et is also a common cause.
