Is it possible to perform total thyroidectomy without touching laryngopharengeal nerve?

Yes.: Most surgeries are actually performed without injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve. However the complication rate varies from 0-10%. Lower rates are associated with high volume surgeons.

Sort of: The surgeon generally looks for the nerve so he/she can safely remove the thyroid without injuring it. So it will likely be touched but not harmed.
