Yes, difficult : Citalopram is a "category c" for safety during pregnancy, meaning that animal studies may show some problems but there are no human studies documenting the same. One must also consider possible behavioral teratogenicity in the child, as well as physical malformations in utero. However, you know you "don't function well" w/o citalopram. Please discuss w/your psychiatrist & your OB doctors.

Option: Yes, it's difficult. An option i suggest to my patients is they can ttc while taking ssri, but be ready to re-evaluate with your psychiatrist once the pregnancy test is positive. At that point you could consider discontinue use, change the dosing, or consider an alternative drug.
