Chronic cough: The usual causes of chronic cough are asthma, post nasal drip from sinus infection, allergies or stomach acid reflux. There are many other less common causes. Some causes can be related to smoking, so it would be important to stop smoking. An allergist or pulmonologist can help get to the cause, so a treatment plan can bring some relief.

Detective work: The cause of your cough is likely to be a combination of post-nasal drip, reflux of acid from the stomach and/or cough-variant asthma. In order to figure out the source it starts with taking a good history. Then, it may require a trial of medication to see what works. We are also seeing alot of pertussis (whooping cough) as well these days. Seeing a cough specialist may be the answer.
