Evaluation by a MD: You need to be seen by a physician. I would recommend xrays. Most broken fingers heal well without intervention. However if it is dislocated or if the fracture is severely angled, an intervention may be necessary.

Good advice: If it has been a day or two since the injury and is still swollen and painful you need to see a doctor. May need an x-ray.
