A 62-year-old female asked:
is zioptan for glaucoma safe to take? why do glaucoma meds stop working after a while?

Zioptan is safe: Zioptan is another addition to a successful class of antiglaucoma medications with a very favorable safety profile. Most anti-glaucoma medications lose effectiveness because of the progression of the underlying disease. Probably in some cases it is due to some degree of resistance to the medication but this is a less likely cause. Regular checkups are mandatory.

Safe: Zioptin is safe, as long as you do not have an allergy to any of the components in the drop. Drops and their affects can become less with long term use, this typically only happens with beta blocker drops. It is possible the pressure became more difficult to control due to the underlying cause, instead of the drops not working.

Yes: The purpose of treatment is to save the optical nerve from damage and to normalize the pressure inside the eye. This can be done mostly by surgery.

How is glaucoma detected?

Eye examination: Screening for glaucoma is usually performed as part of a standard eye examination performed by ophthalmologists and optometrists. Testing for glaucoma should include measurements of the intraocular pressure via tonometry, changes in size or shape of the eye, anterior chamber angle examination or gonioscopy, and examination of the optic nerve to look for any visible damage to it.

A 25-year-old member asked:
Is glaucoma inherited?
6 doctor answers • 17 doctors weighed in

Dr. Robert Chang answered

Yes: Yes there is a genetic component (small percentage of the total), but the disease is still, for the most part, multifactorial. Thus genetic testing is not common since not all the genes for glaucoma have been identified yet. Glaucoma genetic studies are ongoing, including mapping out the phenotype.

Mostly unknown: A few cases of glaucoma occur due to trauma, inherited problems and anatomical underpinnings. The majority - 'open angle glaucoma'- is largely age related with no known cause.
