A member asked:

Can a torn meniscus repair on its own?

Location of tear: Imagine the meniscus as looking like a crescent moon. Radial tears (those occurring along the arc of the outer edge of the "moon") can sometimes heal because they are in an area where there is a good blood supply, which is necessary for healing. Other types of tears occurring along the inner arc will not heal as they occur in an area with little or no blood supply.

No.: In rare cases a torn meniscus can repair itself. Only specific tears have this capability. Most tears do not heal but the symptoms can subside.

Not often: Imagine the meniscus as having the shape of a crescent moon. The inner 2/3 has a poor potential for as it has no blood supply (necessary for healing). The outer 1/3 does have a blood supply and has the potential for healing. Surgery is often required to bring the torn meniscus together to allow for healing.
