Environment: If the environment is noisy, baby is on nasal cannuli or is crying at the time, test can be falsely failed. Best to repeat in a few days prior to discharge.

Other reasons: There are two types of hearing loss, conductive and sensorineural. A conductive loss is caused by problems in the outer or middle ear. This is the type of loss from fluid , impacted wax in the outer ear or malformation of the ears.Sensorineural loss indicates problem in the inner ear or along the nerve to the ear .This type of loss is permanent and is treated with hearing aid.
