Only at...: ...Close range. There is no evidence that it is easier to damage a newborn's hearing by excessive noise, than it is anyone else's. So if if the noise hurts uyour ears, it hurts a newborn's too.

Very sensitive: The hearing is well developed even before birth. Any thing that could hurt the ear drum like loud noise is not good for the baby's ear. Babys prefer quite rhythmic sounds, as most of studies showed, especially the mom's voice and heart beat. Actually listening to these rhythmic sounds starting even before birth is of beneficial effect.
