Get it checked: Irritated tongue could be a type of neuritis with many causes. If you have used smokeless tobacco for many years, there is a chance that an oral cancerous lesion could be impinging upon anerve causing dysthesia (disrupted sensation), but not likely since a quid of tobacco is usually held in the pouch between the cheek and gum. Have your dentist perform an oral cancer screening and full exam.
