Macrobid: Current recommendations are that the first medication given for UTI is microfurantoin twice daily for 3-5 days. This drug is ideal, because it is quickly and effectively concentrated in the urine (where the infection is), essentially goes nowhere else, and summarily kills the bacterial in the urinary tract. If you are allergic, other choices would be Bactrim or cipro (ciprofloxacin).

UTI medication: The type of antibiotic used to treat a UTI depends on the organism causing it. If you have a uti, go to a doctor and have her order a urine culture. She will place you on an antibiotic for 7-10 days of therapy. If the organism causing the UTI is sensitive to the antibiotic you are on, continue it until you run out of pills. If it is not, your doctor will call you and change your antibiotic.
