Your doctor would an: It is not safe to take metformin if your kidney function is not normal(creatinine<1.5mg). But there are other alternative medicines to control your blood sugar. Ask your doctor what he would offer you as an alternative drug to treat your diabetes. There are clearly other alternatives to metformin.
