It can: Gentle regular early range of motion exercises should be safe within your surgeons safe zone. Resisted exercises could be over done, and can lead to increased swelling and then stiffness. Some periods of rest with ice and elevation are also important. Recovery is not a race, so remember to give your body a chance to heal. As swelling resolves, then you can safely increase resisted exercise.

Sounds right: The recommendation by pt sounds right. If you overdo it you will swell and hurt and have a setback. Motivation is important but the first two week take it easy.
