Well, if u : Have shingles you may need real pain medicine.. Gabapentin can be helpful in preventing long term nerve pain. Of course an antiviral like valacyclovir can diminish the length of the problem and a topical, such as Lidocaine gel, can provide good relief. Good luck.

Lidoderm: I would try lidoderm. While it is for the "pain" of post herpetic neuralgia, it will also help the itch.

See a dermatologist: The details matter! Where is it? How long? Are you SURE it is shingles? It is unusual for this to cause significant itch. PAIN is always present, especially at your age. The degree of pain varies. If it is not your face or eyelids you can try a topical cortisone. This diagnosis is frequently made in error by Drs who are not skin specialists.
