A member asked:

Is it possible to have bacterial vaginosis for years and have it mistakenly diagnosed as reacurrent yeast infections? does this cause damage?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Possibly: Recent article in clinical infectious diseases journal showing that sexual activity can play a major role in recurrence of BV and frequency effected by oral contraception. Certainly not entirely normal, and conceivably organisms producing chronic inflammation can lead to scarring and potentially infertility, tubal pregnancy and other issues.
