Need more info.: Did this occur after eating? Could you have traumatized the tongue? Recently bit your tongue? Is your tongue pierced? Any swelling of the tongue? There are many reasons, pain is typically caused by a nerve that is damaged either directly (from injury / trauma) or indirectly (from an internal swelling that puts pressure on the nerve) if it continues, see your dentist for an evaluation.

See below: Did you do something ie bite your tongue, get a piercing? Usually this is the result of an in jury or an irritation . Have your dentist take a look.
