I have a history of low prolactin levels.what does this cause or is it caused by and should it be treated?

No treatment: We get concerned if prolactin levels are high when not pregnant. Prolactin is a pituitary hormone that promotes breast milk development during pregnancy and afterwards. Most labs cannot differentiate between a normal prolactin and a low prolactin. As long as pituitary function is otherwise normal, low prolactin means nothing. If you have regular periods, chances are your pituitary is normal.

No problem: Low prolactin levels are not a medical problem, only elevated levels. There is no work-up or treatment needed. Relax.
