Yes they do vary: Three broad areas of impairment define autism: social, language, and behaviors. Depending on the severity of the disorder, impairment can range from complete lack of social interactions to difficulties mainly with peers, from no language at all to fairly good language but with unusual features, and from mild behavioral oddities such as hand flapping to major restrictions in & unusual interests.

DSM-V criteria for : Autistic spectrum disorder, which includes autism, Asperger syndrome & pdd-nos. Are specific observable behaviors that manifest as qualitative impairments in social communication & reciprocal social interaction for developmental age + stereotypies (repetitive, non-functional movements) &/or narrow, restricted areas of interest. Degree/ severity can vary. But underlying deficits are the same.
