The best test: For past exposure to hsv is specific antibody but does not predict getting active lesions or not. Dx from lesions can be made by viral culture. Hiv is screened for by antibody as well and the virus RNA can be tested for in the blood.

Why am I getting fever blisters? Ive only had one in my lifetime and thats when I was 10, so it cant be because of the HSV virus.
My mother had annual HSV-1 outbreaks for many years when I was growing up. Similarly, my first girlfriend also had frequent outbreaks, yet I've never had a single one. Can I assume that I'm asymptomatic and already have the virus or is it unlikely?
