Physical therapy: Anterior knee pain is rarely a surgical indication. Usually it can be alleviated with bracing, physical therapy (directed at quad strengthening, and hamstring stretching), and sometimes orthotics in your shoes if you are an overpronatior.

Activity mod: This is likely patellofemoral syndrome. It usually responds to pt focused on vmo strengthening, avoidance of squats, lunges, and stairs, and a short course of nsaids. You should preach patience, because treatment takes time, and the patient is usually the only one who can fix the problem.
